May 1997

It has been a varied and busy six months. Tabitha continues to grow and flourish- at he end of April we are working with 1030 families affecting 8240 people. The staff continue to do good work and at present, ad an average of 70 new families each month. Our sales of cottage-industry products in the past seven months add up to more than the total of the last program year. We are truly blessed.

It has been a time of increasing tension for Cambodia. The political parties are vying for power and in that process, threats and counter-threats of violence are the norm to bring about individual and corporate wills. This past month, this tension has increased to a level that has affected the lives of the people in a sad way. Many of our staff and our recipients are developing symptoms of post-traumatic stress. A malaise of helplessness and fear mark their everyday lives. We talk much about the situation, comfort each other and encourage each other. We speak of our fallibility as humans, our tendency to hurt and disappoint each other and how this is a common trait in the leadership of this country. We speak of how this is not just true for Cambodia but for all nations and peoples. We speak of choices - choosing to put ourselves first and foremost, no matter the cost for others - or of choosing to put others first, costing us personal effort and pain but in the end benefiting all of us.
